Matthew McConaughey almost became Jack Dawson in ‘Titanic’, but his Southern drawl may have cost him the role, according to a new revelation.

In a memoir by the late producer Jon Landau, as reported by ‘People’, McConaughey auditioned for the iconic part, but director James Cameron wasn’t convinced by the actor’s accent. While McConaughey was confident in his performance, Cameron had other ideas.

“That’s great, now let’s try it a different way,” Cameron told him. But McConaughey wasn’t on board. “No. That was pretty good. Thanks,” he replied. And that, according to Landau, was the end of the road for him.

Eventually, the role went to Leonardo DiCaprio, and the rest is movie history. His portrayal of Jack Dawson helped make ‘Titanic’ one of the most successful films of all time, earning 11 Oscars and becoming a cultural phenomenon.

Still, missing out on ‘Titanic’ didn’t derail McConaughey’s career. The actor went on to become a major Hollywood star, known for films like ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’, ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, ‘Interstellar’, and ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’.

Interestingly, Matthew McConaughey has previously talked about that ‘Titanic’ audition. On Rob Lowe’s podcast ‘Literally! with Rob Lowe’ in 2021, he shared that he had read lines for the role with Kate Winslet and thought it went well.

In fact, he said there were hugs and smiles afterwards, and he truly believed he was going to be offered the part.

But the offer never came.

“There was talk for a while that I was offered the role and turned it down,” McConaughey recalled on the podcast. “But that’s not true. I never got the offer.”

He even followed up with James Cameron later to clear things up. “I asked him about it directly,” McConaughey said. “The rumor that I had turned it down just wasn’t true. I didn’t turn it down — I was never offered it.”

Jokingly, the actor said he wanted to track down the agent who was spreading the wrong story. “For a while, I was saying, ‘I gotta find that agent. They’re in trouble.’”

‘Titanic’, released in 1997, was a mix of historical tragedy and fictional love story. It followed Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, played by DiCaprio and Winslet, as they fall in love aboard the doomed RMS Titanic in 1912. The film also starred Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Bernard Hill, and Bill Paxton.
